What to Wear to your Family Photoshoot

The most common question I am asked by Clients preparing for their family session is “what should we wear for our photo shoot?”. If you would like some guidance on how to create a more styled look to the photographs, here are a few suggestions.

1. BE COMFORTABLE & YOURSELVES

Make sure everyone is wearing something comfortable. The session may involve sitting on the ground, moving around, or exploring, choose outfits that allow for some flexibility. The more comfortable everyone is, the easier it will be to capture natural, candid smiles.

What is most important is that you and your family are true to yourselves. If you want to document your children just as they are at this moment in time, it might be important for their (and your) memories that they wear their beloved Spiderman t-shirt or Princess  tiara. Above all, make sure your personalities shine through.

2. COORDINATE WITHOUT MATCHING

Aim to coordinate colors and styles without looking too “matchy-matchy.” Start by picking a color palette with 2-3 complementary colors that work well together. For example, you could choose soft neutrals with a pop of color, or shades of blue paired with earth tones. Then, let each family member express their individuality within those colors.

Incorporating different textures and patterns can add depth and interest to your photos. When mixing patterns, aim for subtlety so the look isn’t too overwhelming. A plaid shirt for one person and small polka dots on another can work well if the colors coordinate.

3. PLAN FOR LAYERS & ACCESSORIES

Layers can add dimension to your photos and allow for a quick change of look if needed. Consider adding jackets, cardigans, or scarves, especially if you’re shooting in cooler weather. Accessories like hats, belts, and jewelry can add character and personality to the outfits. However, be mindful not to go overboard—less is often more when it comes to accessories in family photos.

4. BRING THE DOG…

Or any other part of your family you want included! If you have extended family in town, bring them and we can have them jump in on a photo or two.  Also it’s helpful to have an extra person to make people laugh or hold layers etc.

Just remember if you bring your pup to also bring treats or their favorite toy so we can keep their attention. Please only bring well behaved dogs though that won’t be too much of distraction during your shoot!

5. HAVE FUN!

Most importantly, wear what makes you happen and will allow you to have fun!  This is your session and feel free to follow these guidelines or not!
